Panama City,Panama- Team USA soccer will visit Panama at Rommel Fernandez stadium today at 830pm in a friendly match.
Panama coach Julio Dely Valdés has called in a mostly U-23 squad in preparation for March’s Olympic qualifying tournament in the US.
So despite the home-field advantage, the young Panama team may have trouble with a slightly more senior squad from the north, comprising mostly MLS-based players.
•The U.S. holds a 7-1-2 lifetime record against Panama, including a 1-0-1 record on Panamanian soil.
•In their last encounter, Clint Dempsey scored the lone goal in the USA’s 1-0 victory in the semifinal round of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, marking the fourth straight time that the U.S. has eliminated Panama from the Gold Cup’s knockout round.
•Earlier in that tournament, Panama collected its only victory against the United States, a 2-1 win on June 11 in Tampa, Fla. The defeat remains the only U.S. loss ever in the group phase of the tournament dating back to 1991.
•Four players earned their first cap this past Saturday: A.J. DeLaGarza, Bill Hamid, C.J. Sapong and Graham Zusi.
•Brek Shea, a member of the 2011 MLS Best XI, is now the only player to appear in all eight matches since Klinsmann became head coach.
•The U.S. defeated a team from South America for the first time since March 25, 2007, a 3-1 win against Ecuador, ending a 13-match winless run against teams from that continent.
•Four players on the roster are age-eligible to compete in qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games: Teal Bunbury, Hamid, Johnson and Shea.
